About the Winery
The square plan of Chateau Couronneau, its four corner towers complete with arrow slits, and the wide ditches that surround it, place its construction in the 15th century, during the struggle between the French and the English. Chateau Couronneau sits atop the hills bordering the east of the Gironde department like a protective sentry. The Chateau’s winery buildings have jealously guarded the elaboration of wines since 1620. The current owners of the Chateau, Christophe and Benedicte Piat, are firmly committed to using organic methods in the production of their grapes and wines. Their wines are certified organic by Ecocert, which is a designation accepted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The Chateau is situated between the villages of Ligueux and Pineuilh between the Bordeaux and Bergerac regions. It is surrounded by 80 hectares, of which 32 are planted in vines. Three and one-quarter hectares are planted with white grapes: Sauvignon, Semillon and Muscadelle. Twenty-eight and three/quarters are planted in red grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Chateau Couronneau Classic White
Dry White wine, 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 50% Sauvignon Gris; citric taste, grassy. Oak aged in old large vats so that the wine keeps its fresh clean taste. Named one of the top Bordeaux Blance by “Aperitif” magazine. Organically grown and made. Wine make was named “Top Winemaker in Bordeaux” in 2002. Very limited production (Less than 500 cases)
Chateau Couronneau Ecuyer de Couronneau
This delicious dry red wine in composed of 100% Merlot. Certified organic. Rich fruit of blackcurrant and strawberry and very elegant with soft tannins, this wine is excellent for daily use or for large events. It has a fruity nose and taste. Only limited quantities of this wine are produced. Winemaker was named “Top Winemaker in Bordeaux” in 2002. “90 pts. James Suckling”, “2016 Gold Medal at Frankfort”.
Chateau Couronneau Classic Red
This delicious dry red wine in composed of 100% Merlot. Certified organic. Aged 12 months in oak cask. Rich fruit of black currant and strawberry and very elegant with soft tannins. It has a fruity nose and taste. Only limited quantities of this wine are produced. Winemaker was named “Top Winemaker in Bordeaux” in 2002. “Silver Medal” Competition of Bio Wines in France 2017, ‘2015 94 pts International Bio Wine Press”, “Gold Medal 2015 Genologues de France”
Chateau Couronneau Cuvee Pierre de Cartier
This luscious, powerful dry red wine is 100% Merlot. It is certified Organic. The grapes are handpicked from the vines that are more than 30 years old and are 100% hand de-stemmed. The wine is filtered with egg whites and aged 12 months in oak barrels. Only limited quantites of this wine are produced: 1,200 cases. This wine has been a “5 Gold Medal” winning wine for the past 10 years. Winemaker was named “Top Winemaker in Bordeaux” in 2002. “Gold Medal” 2015 Genologues de France.
